With the wreck of the USAT Liberty lying on a bed of volcanic sand, Tulamben is the best-known diving site in Bali, with an exceptional concentration of fish in a fairy-land setting.

In 1942, this American cargo ship was transporting military equipment from Australia to the Philippines when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Lombok Strait. The Liberty had to be towed to the port of Singaraja but it was taking in too much water and was left on the beach at Tulamben. In 1963, the eruption of Mount Agung, the sacred Balinese mountain, caused the ship to be pushed back into the sea, for our greater pleasure…
